Gmail no longer auto-adds contacts & Google Docs creates templates

It's been known for a few days (if you read some other blogs) but yesterday the Gmail Blog officially announced the end of Gmail auto-adding everyone you email into your contact list.

We've heard from some of you that Gmail's auto-added contacts can lead to too much address book clutter. One of the advantages of automatically creating contacts is that all of the addresses you email subsequently show up in auto-complete. We wanted to preserve this benefit while giving you the ability to have a clean, uncluttered contact list, and we've come up with a solution that's rolling out this week. It separates your contacts into two groups: "My Contacts" and "Suggested Contacts."

For anyone disappointed by this announcement (anyone?) you'll be glad to know that Gmail will still automatically add contacts into your contact list IF you email them regularly (whatever that means). You can turn this feature off if you want to be really tight about who gets in and who doesn't.

In other Google Apps news, the Google Blog posted about Google Docs templates. There are currently 302 templates available in Google Docs.

When researching how people use templates, we saw that lots of you create documents for all aspects of your lives.

Creepy. But also obvious.

There is especially good news if you are planning a wedding, calculating traveling expenses or creating a photo album because there are specific templates...JUST FOR YOU! Check them out, and check out the very strange videos over at the Google Blog that explain the story behind the templates.
